A 45-minute lesson where students are introduced to the Analyzing a Product Market summative assessment, review the rubric, and practice applying it to two sample analyses before the assessment workday.

Overview

In this lesson, students get a preview of the first Unit 2 summative assessment, familiarize themselves with the rubric, and apply the rubric to two sample assessments.

Slides 2–4

  1. Display Slide 2. Allow 4 minutes for students to write a response to their chosen prompt. (Additional educator tips and suggested answers are in the notes section throughout Instruction Slides.)
  2. Advance to Slide 3. Have students stand up, take their activator response with them, and find a partner. Facilitate partnerships as needed — a group of 3 can be created if class numbers require it. Once students have located their partner, each should share their response. Students can stay in these pairings for the next portion of class or be placed in new partnerships.
  3. Proceed to Slide 4. Introduce the learning objectives for the lesson.

  1. Progress through Slides 5–6. Tell students they will be introduced to the assessment, Analyzing a Product Market, and will have time to review the assessment requirements, rubric, and practice applying the rubric to assessment samples. Students will write their analysis in the next class period.
  2. Advance to Slide 7. Distribute 1 copy of Preview: Analyzing a Product Market to each student. Instruct students to read the "Task" and "Instructions" sections. Encourage students to make note of questions that come up as they read.
  3. Progress through Slides 8–11. Review and clarify the general overview and structure of the assessment using the no-stakes true/false "quiz."
  4. Proceed to Slide 12. Alert students that they will be scored using the rubric and that the rubric is their roadmap to success. Instruct students to read the rubric on Preview: Analyzing a Product Market.
  5. Progress through Slides 13–14. Tell students they will practice applying the rubric to two sample analyses. Instruct students to read the text on Slide 14 as you distribute 1 copy of Sample Analysis to each student.
  6. Allow pairs 15 minutes to complete the task outlined on Slide 14.
  7. Proceed to Slide 15 and poll the class to determine how each sample was scored. Discuss the scoring and rationale as a class. Encourage students to explain their thinking.
  8. Use Slides 16–17 and Suggested Scoring Rationale to support class discussion of scoring rationale as needed.
  9. Display Slide 18. Pause while students share their responses to the prompts on the slide with a classmate.

  1. Progress through Slides 19–20. Present an option students should consider completing outside of class to prepare for the assessment. Post Instruction Slides to your learning management system.
  2. Advance to Slide 21. Direct students to get a piece of scratch paper (a quarter sheet will be sufficient; one side may be written on). Tell students to write their names and responses on the sheet.
  3. Collect summarizers and review for common areas of confusion to address at the start of the assessment workday. Collect Sample Analysis.
